PRODUCT STRATEGY

Website or mobile app? Start with what customers need to do.

A mobile app sounds exciting. A website feels familiar. Neither is automatically the right answer.

Begin with the task, not the platform

If customers need to find you, understand a service and make a booking, a well-designed mobile website may cover the essential journey. If they perform frequent tasks, rely on device capabilities or expect a personalized logged-in experience, a mobile app may add real value.

Ask how often people will return

Apps ask users to download, install and keep a product on their phone. That is a meaningful commitment. A website is often easier to discover and share. Think about frequency, convenience and whether a push notification or device feature truly matters.

Know what is behind the screens

Payments, authentication, location, chat, reporting and custom databases can make either option complex. Two projects with similar-looking interfaces can require very different engineering effort.

A sensible way to decide

Sketch the main customer journey. Create a simple prototype. Test whether the most valuable action works smoothly. Then choose the platform that supports it without unnecessary cost.
